There's More to see in 'Tennessee' than Mariah Carey
Posted on 07 Dec 2008

Sweet story about brothers with pretty pictures and a glam-free Mariah Carey. Mariah Carey and "Oscar-qualifying run" may strike you as a jarring association, but her new movie, "Tennessee," opens today for a one-week engagement to put the film into consideration.
Into consideration for what, you might ask. Those who remember Carey's stink-bomb star turn in "Glitter" might be a little gun-shy about any kind of Mimi movie, even one, like "Tennessee," that isn't a vehicle for the diva.
Apparently, what the filmmakers are hoping for (or are contractually obligated to hope for) is consideration for Carey's song "Right to Dream," a pretty, acoustic number she co-wrote with Willie Nelson and sings in "Tennessee." Academy voters have nominated dozens of songs less distinguished than this one, and, who knows, if the movie's producers are willing to pony up some free food and photo ops, maybe Carey can score a Golden Globe nod.
As for the movie itself, "Tennessee" is a low-key, sentimental road movie about two brothers looking to lick wounds from the past and start anew. It's well-acted and contains dozens of beautiful, wide shots of wintry landscapes and will probably satisfy anyone who winds up checking it out when it goes (almost direct) to DVD next year.
Brothers Carter (Adam Rothenberg) and Ellis (Ethan Peck) left their Tennessee home as teenagers, sick of suffering abuse from their alcoholic father (Bill Sage). Many years later, Ellis falls ill with leukemia and the boys must return home to see if dear old dad might be a bone marrow match for the younger brother.
All this happens before the opening credits have ended. Fortunately, the movie doesn't heap on much more tragedy after that, settling into a meandering, sweet story of brotherly love. Carey shows up halfway through, playing a world-weary Texas waitress who leaves her own abusive relationship behind to join the brothers on their trip to Tennessee.
Carey is appropriately dolled down and dialed down here, though she makes a rather startling transformation when she enters a singing contest in Nashville. It's hard to decide what's more impressive - the guitarist and harmonica player who instantly learn Carey's song without any rehearsal or the fact that Carey does a complete hairstyle change in less than two minutes before hitting the stage. Maybe the makeup artist deserves an Oscar, now that we think about it. We'll rest well tonight, knowing the work has qualified.

Nick Buys Mariah a Ski Lodge
Posted on 03 Dec 2008

Rumours Mariah Carey's marriage is on the rocks are way off piste... her comedian hubby Nick Cannon has splashed out £1 million on a luxury five-bedroom chalet for her to go skiing in Aspen.
An insider said: "Nick is clearly still in the honeymoon phase. He's shocked all their pals by going out of his way to nab Mariah this beautiful sanctuary. He doesn't want her to go to the hassle of renting. He knows Aspen is one of her most favourite places in the world so this is his early Christmas present to her."
We're sorry to ruin the surprise for Mimi but Nick has also bought the I Stay in Love with You singer a diamond ring to put in each of the rooms. Looks like Mariah's not the only moneybags in the relationship.

Mariah Expecting?
Posted on 01 Dec 2008
|
|
Is Mariah Carey expecting something? Yes! Grammy nominations. But what about a baby? It seems not, at least for the moment.
It doesn't mean that she hasn't been trying. Since she married much younger actor Nick Cannon last spring, the speculation is that Mariah would soon be pregnant.
Last week, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres kept prodding her about it in an interview. She even tried to get her to drink Champagne. When Mariah only sipped it, Ellen declared, "You're pregnant!" Well, there are plenty of other reasons not to drink on national television. But in this case, it wasn't pregnancy.
A friend of Mariah's laughed when I asked if the singing siren was knitting baby booties. "She isn't," the friend replied, and added that there was no sign of the stork yet.
What Mariah may be expecting this week are Grammy nominations for her "E=MC²" album. She's scheduled to be one of the hosts this Wednesday, Dec. 3, on the Grammy's prime time show on CBS. She, Taylor Swift and LL Cool J will announce nominees in six of the top categories.
Knowing the Grammys, they haven't asked Mariah to do it unless she's in good shape. "E=MC²" should pick up nods in Best R&B album, Best Pop album, and Best Female in both R&B and pop.

Mariah Carey: 'I haven't had plastic surgery'
Posted on 29 May 2008
|
|
Mariah Carey has reassured British fans that her slender figure is not down to plastic surgery. The singer sparked rumours that she had gone under the knife when she shed more than two stone earlier this year.
However, she insisted that her new physique is a result of diet and exercise, saying: "I know the UK is freaking out that I had some crazy plastic surgery done, but... honestly, it's working out and diet. Look at what I'm eating right now - olives!"
She added: "It makes me upset that people think I've had surgery, 'cause let's discuss how annoying the dieting process was. My girls will eat really good fried food, and I also love sweet plantain and rice and peas, but I can't eat it! If I eat it, it's small!"

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have extravagant plans to renew vows...
Posted on 29 May 2008
|
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon are reported to be spending a colossal two million pounds on a ceremony in New York to renew their wedding vows. The newlyweds married in last month in the Bahamas at one of Mariah’s getaway retreats but now it seems the pop queen would like to grace the aisle for an additional performance. The rumours state that the ‘re-wedding’ will happen in New York City within the next six weeks and will feature in excess of two thousand guests! Whilst some may settle for an intimate anniversary, Mariah recently told Ellen DeGeneres that she plans to have an annual ceremony with Nick to celebrate their union. _______________________________________ MCC, Mariah Carey Cannon, reached out exclusively to MTV UK News to deny the rumours that she intends to spend $4 Million dollars (£2 million pounds) on a ceremony in New York to renew their wedding vows. MTV UK News posted a story earlier on and in response Mariah had to set us straight “4 milly? On what Cake? Lol”. Mariah referred to herself as MCC to mark her union and we’re guessing you’ll be hearing those initials a lot in the coming months. Mrs CC also told us that she was over the moon when hubby Nick Cannon rented out an entire Six Flags Theme park in the states to surprise her! MCC went on to describe her man as a “Stone Smash”.

Mariah Talks Babies, Britney, Barack
Posted on 03 Mar 2008
|
|
Mariah Carey has a lot on her mind these days.
In an exclusive interview, which airs Monday on Yo on E! as heard on E! Entertainment Radio, XM & Sirius, the Daydream diva dished to host Michael Yo about everything from her faith in God and the possibility of one day having a child to Britney Spears' meltdown and, yes, even backing Barack Obama for president of the United States. (Click here for the audio clip.)
While plugging her upcoming album, E=MC2, the 38-year-old Carey reflected on her personal life and her future now that she's dating record exec Mark Sudack. For now, that doesn't appear to include babies, though the singer didn't rule out the possibility.
"Obviously having a kid is a commitment for life," she told Yo. "I really would have to be very, very positive that I was in a place where I could completely focus and put everything into the job of being someone's mommy cause it's hard enough to have a puppy." On life after the bomb that was 2001's Glitter album and movie and her subsequent comeback, Carey pointed to her faith as a source of strength.
"You know what, I never lost my faith in God and that’s the main thing," she noted. "For me its about my personal relationship with God and just feeling centered and just not letting anything really penetrate that. That’s something that’s sacred for me that I have for myself no matter what." In light of the personal crisis Carey faced in the wake of Glitter's failure when she checked herself into a hospital to be treated for an emotional and physical breakdown, Yo also got her take on the Britster's current travails and whether or not the pop tart can recover.
"I think anybody who loves music and is committed to the game can do whatever. I never count people out, that’s just not in my nature but that is a part of human nature, people like to do that but with me especially with making this new record, its all about the music." Carey also laughed off concerns about what the public might think about her from reading the very same gossip zines that are making a bundle reporting on Spears' struggles.
"If people ever said things that are not in my character like doing serious drugs or anything of that nature that’s just not me and that’s never been me and it never will be," she said. "Things like, 'oh she was going to commit suicide'--that’s never ever, nobody could get me to that point because I have too much respect for God and for life. One of the rumors I just heard about was that $150,000 in plastic surgery. What in the ham sandwich do they think I did? It’s very annoying." The subject eventually switched to politics, something Carey confessed isn't exactly her strong suit.
"Are you watching the debates?" asked Yo. "Clearly I’m no political analyst. We all know that my album is called E=MC2 but I’m not exactly friggin Einstein," joked the "Love Takes Time" singer. "So basically I like to leave that to people who know what they are talking about, but I am very much more focused on this moment in our history." "Have you picked anyone?" asked Yo. "Yes, clearly," she answered. "Can you say?" "That's personal but it's pretty obvious," the entertainer replied. "Come on Mariah, 'Yes we can' Mr. Barack Obama?' Laughing, Carey came clean: "Yes we can!"
E=MC2 is scheduled to hit stores on April 15. The first single, "Touch My Body," was streamed digitally to radio stations on Feb. 12 and hard copies went out a week later.
